CBD oil is often discussed lately as state and federal governments continue to pass laws that roll back regulations on all products related to cannabis.

The drug has been referred to in some circles as a wunderkind type of treatment (not cure) to help with cancer, anxiety, pain and other inflammation. The headlines and debates are centered around the legalization of marijuana as a recreational drug, but CBD oil can get lost in the shuffle.

What Makes CBD Oil Legal?

A medical marijuana license is not needed to sell CBD Oil. The substance attributed for getting people “high” is THC — something that CBD oil has none of. So while the oil is derived from the cannabis plant, its effects on the body are much more timid, and thusly, are not classified as a controlled substance.

It has three different forms: green (unfiltered straight hemp oil), blue (filtered, but not cooked) and gold (filtered, cooked down). CBD oil is derived from sativa, which is considered a non-psychoactive cannabis plant.

Because of this, the FDA classifies it as a dietary supplement. Though it does not have any scientifically-proven medicinal properties, enough have sworn by its usage for it to become popular on the market.

It’s important to note the word science as an addendum to the benefits and effects of CBD oil. The drug has not been subject to major testing in the scientific community as of early 2019, and is considered “pseudo-scientific.”

Why is it so popular now?

CBD oil is thought to by many to have the beneficial powers of cannabis without the THC, including having a calming effect and also, as a mild analgesic for patients with arthritis.

Additionally, it is notable as a nootropic substance that, for some, increases the cognitive benefits that come from treating anxiety. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

How is it administered and are there side effects?

There are a handful of different ways to administer CBD oil, including tinctures, vapes, capsules and topical creams. Tinctures simply drop a couple drops under your tongue and wait to swallow.

Some may experience side effects, such as headaches. But these are more common from untrustworthy brands bought online.
